Nautical Term: Longitudinal stability

Definition of Longitudinal stability

Longitudinal stability refers to a ship’s ability to maintain its balance and resist pitching or heeling movements along its length.

For instance, when a container ship loads cargo, the weight distribution along the ship’s length changes. The master of the ship and the navigation team must ensure that the ship maintains its longitudinal stability throughout the voyage.
