Nautical Term: GRT

Definition of GRT

?Gross Registered Tonnage? or GRT refers to the total internal volume of a ship measured in cubic meters, register tonnes or register tons. This measurement considers the actual interior space occupied by the ship’s cargo, fuel, crew, and provisions.

As an example, imagine a shipping company looking to expand its fleet. The company decides to purchase a new container ship with a gross registered tonnage of 15,000 tonnes. With this substantial cargo capacity, the new ship will be able to transport a large volume of goods across international waters.
