Nautical Term: Gusset plate
Definition of Gusset plate
A gusset plate is a triangular-shaped steel plate that is used to strengthen and provide additional support to the joints of structures, such as corners of hulls in shipbuilding, or angles in bridge construction. For instance, in a ship’s hull, gusset plates are often welded to the internal structural framework to help distribute loads evenly and prevent the hull from buckling under the weight of the cargo or water.
