Definition of I-Beam

An I-Beam is a type of steel beam that is characterized by its distinctive cross-sectional shape, which vaguely resembles the letter I. In structural applications, I-Beams are commonly used for their high load-carrying capacity and their ability to be easily fabricated and installed in various structures such as bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure projects.

For instance, in the construction of a multi-story building, I-Beams would be used as the primary load-bearing members to support the weight of the floors, walls, and other structural components of the building. The I-Beams would be installed in a grid pattern, with the vertical legs of the I-Beams resting on the building’s foundation, and the horizontal arms of the I-Beams supporting the weight of the floors above them. This basic structural system utilizing I-Beams would provide the necessary strength and stability to support the weight of the entire building, allowing it to safely and efficiently serve its intended purpose as a functional and habitable structure for its occupants.
