Nautical Term: Inserted packing red lead
Definition of Inserted packing red lead
Inserted packing, also known as red lead packing, refers to a strip of canvas that has been soaked in red lead paint. This strip is then inserted between connections that cannot be successfully caulked. For instance, in the process of repairing a ship’s hull, the crew might encounter a connection between two metal plates that cannot be adequately sealed with caulk. In such a situation, the crew would insert a strip of red lead-soaked canvas between the two metal plates to effectively seal the connection.
