Definition of ISWG

The Intersessional Working Group on Maritime Security, also known as IWG-MS, is a permanent expert body established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IWG-MS is tasked with providing expert advice and recommendations to the IMO Maritime Security Committee on issues related to maritime security, including piracy and armed robbery against ships, terrorism, and illicit trafficking.

The recent increase in piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea necessitated the establishment of an expert body to provide recommendations to the IMO on effective measures to combat piracy and armed robbery against ships in the region.

The Intersessional Working Group on Maritime Security (IWG-MS) was therefore established under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IWG-MS is mandated to provide expert advice and recommendations to the IMO Maritime Security Committee on issues related to maritime security, including piracy and armed robbery against ships, terrorism, and illicit trafficking.
