Nautical Term: Jack

Definition of Jack

A ‘Jack’ flag is a small flag, typically shaped like a triangle or a quadrant, bearing a design resembling the union of the national flag. It is hoisted at the jackstaff, located at the bow or the stern of a vessel, depending on the specific nautical tradition. For instance, a British merchant vessel might fly the Jack at the bow, while a US Navy warship would hoist it at the stern.
