Nautical Term: Holiday

Definition of Holiday

A term used s to refer to small, unintentional imperfections that remain on a ship’s hull after cleaning or painting. These spots do not pose a significant risk to the ship’s performance or safety, but they may still be of concern to particular individuals or organizations due to their impact on the ship’s appearance.

Example: During the annual dry docking of the cruise ship, the ship’s hull was found to have several small, unpainted spots, or ‘holidays,’ as they are known in the nautical industry. Although these spots did not pose a significant risk to the ship’s performance or safety, they were still of concern to the cruise line due to their impact on the ship’s appearance. As a result, the ship’s hull was sent back to the shipyard for further cleaning and repainting to ensure that the ship’s hull was free of any visible imperfections, or ‘holidays,’ as they are known in the nautical industry.
