Nautical Term: Kevel (caval)

Definition of Kevel (caval)

A kevel, also known as a caval, is a substantial, metal deck fitting used on vessels. This fitting is characterized by its two horn-shaped arms that project outward. These arms serve as points around which lines can be made fast for towing or mooring of a vessel hull. For example, during a tow operation, the towing lines would be made fast to the kevel’s arms to secure the towed vessel.
