Definition of APPS
The term ‘Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships,’ commonly abbreviated as ‘APPS,’ refers to a set of regulations enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These rules aim to prevent or minimize pollution from ships, particularly those caused by oil or chemicals.
For instance, a cargo ship is approaching the coast of a sensitive marine ecosystem. The ship’s crew is aware of the APPS regulations and the potential risks of discharging pollutants into the ecosystem. To ensure compliance with the APPS rules, the crew follows specific procedures to prevent any pollution incidents.
