Nautical Term: Light, fixed

Definition of Light, fixed

A Light, fixed is a thick, circular glass encased in a frame that is permanently affixed in an opening on the side of a ship, deck house, or bulkhead. The purpose of the fixed light is to provide access for natural light and does not include any hinged or movable parts.

For example, during long voyages at sea, a ship’s crew may rely on natural light to navigate the ship’s interior, especially when entering or exiting cramped spaces such as cargo holds or engine rooms. In such cases, a fixed light may be installed in a strategic location to ensure adequate natural light for the crew to safely perform their duties.
