Nautical Term: Manifold
Definition of Manifold
A large, enclosed structure designed to house multiple valves. These valves control the flow of suction or discharge pipes, which connect to various compartments, tanks, and pumps. By consolidating these pipe connections in one central location, manifolds enable several pumps to draw from or deliver to a single location through a single pipelines system.
For example, consider a large cargo ship. The ship has several tanks for storing various liquids, such as fuel, ballast water, and lubricating oil. Each tank is equipped with a pump and piping system that enables the cargo ship to transfer or receive liquids from other ships or facilities.
However, managing all of these piping systems and their connections to various tanks and compartments can be a complex and time-consuming process. To address this challenge, the cargo ship is equipped with a large manifold structure. This manifold houses multiple valves and connects to various piping systems and their connections to different tanks and compartments. By consolidating these pipe connections in one central location, manifolds enable several pumps to draw from or deliver to a single location through a single pipelines system, making the overall process more efficient and effective.
