Nautical Term: MIN/MAX
Definition of MIN/MAX
Minimum/Maximum, also known as Min/Max, refers to the minimum and maximum cargo quantities that can be safely transported on a ship. This term ensures the safe and efficient utilization of the cargo carrying capacity of a ship.
For instance, consider a cargo ship that is transporting iron ore. The ship’s cargo hold has a total capacity of 50,000 metric tons. However, the ship’s stability analysis and structural capabilities reveal that the safe minimum cargo quantity that should be loaded is 35,000 metric tons, and the safe maximum cargo quantity that should be loaded is 45,000 metric tons.
Therefore, the ship’s crew would ensure that the cargo hold is loaded with a cargo quantity that falls within the safe minimum to safe maximum cargo quantity range. By doing so, the ship’s crew would ensure the safe and efficient transportation of the iron ore cargo from its origin to its destination.
