Sounding is the process of determining the depth of liquid contents in a body of water, such as a harbor or a sea, using various depth-measuring tools like lead lines or sonar devices.

For instance, a mariner might take a sounding to ensure the safe passage of their vessel through a narrow channel or a body of water with known depth variations.
