Nautical Term: Monkey tail

Definition of Monkey tail

A curved attachment, often resembling a curved bar or a ‘U’ shape, that is fixed to the upper, aft end of a rubber tube or hose. This monkey tail is utilized as an attachment for rubber pendants, floats, or other marine accessories.

For instance, a sailor may need to attach a floater to the end of a rope that will be used to drop a buoy in the water. To do this, the sailor can use a monkey tail attachment. The monkey tail will be attached to the upper, aft end of the rubber tube that is connected to the floater. Once the monkey tail is securely attached to the rubber tube, the sailor can attach the rope to the floater, and use it to drop the buoy in the desired location.
