Nautical Term: Planking

Definition of Planking

Planking refers to the large, broad pieces of wood that are used to cover the sides of a wooden vessel, or to cover the deck beams. For instance, during the restoration of an old wooden ship, the planks would be carefully removed, repaired if necessary, and then replaced in their original positions to ensure the structural integrity of the vessel.
