Definition of PPD

Permanent Partial Disability, often referred to as PPD, is a nautical term used to describe an injury that results in a permanent loss of function below 100%.

For example, a sailor may sustain a PPD injury to their dominant hand while handling heavy rigging. Despite medical treatment, the sailor may be left with a permanent partial loss of hand function, resulting in a PPD rating.
