Definition of Gather way

To achieve forward movement, or in other words, to begin making headway in a vessel. For instance, when a sailboat is lying at anchor and the sailor decides it’s time to set sail, they must first ensure their boat has enough forward momentum to break free from the anchor and begin making headway under sail.
