The term ‘quartering sea’ refers to a wave or sea approaching a vessel from a side of the stern, which is referred to as the ‘quarter’.

For example, The fishermen on the small coastal vessel were battling the quartering sea. The waves, originating from the side of the stern, were crashing over the vessel, making it difficult for the fishermen to maintain their balance and carry out their tasks efficiently.
