Nautical Term: Registry

Definition of Registry

:The ship’s document establishing the vessel’s ownership and nationality. This document, known as the ship’s certificate, is a crucial nautical document.

In addition to the ship’s certificate, there is another essential piece of tackling equipment called relieving tackle. This tackle is made up of double and single blocks rove with an endless line. This tackle is used to relieve the strain on the steering engine in heavy weather or emergency situations.

For instance, imagine a large container ship sailing through rough seas. The ship’s crew notices that the steering engine is straining under the pressure of the rough seas. To prevent damage to the steering engine, the crew quickly sets up the relieving tackle. They secure the endless line to the ship’s structure and then attach the relief tackle to the steering engine. As the relieving tackle takes the strain off the steering engine, the crew can make any necessary repairs or adjustments to the engine without fear of further damage. Once the repairs are complete, the crew can disconnect the relieving tackle and stow it away until it is needed again.
