Nautical Term: TSGB
Definition of TSGB
The Training Ship Golden Bear is the official tall ship and sail training vessel of the California Maritime Academy (CMA). This historic and iconic ship serves multiple purposes: providing undergraduate students with hands-on training and experience in various maritime trades and technologies; offering offshore sailing and leadership courses to the public; and participating in international tall ships races and maritime festivals to promote the academy and the maritime industry as a whole.
For instance, during a sail training voyage, cadets may be tasked with navigating the ship using traditional nautical methods and charts; steering the vessel through rough waters or maneuvering it in tight docking situations; maintaining and repairing various components of the ship, such as its sails, rigging, pumps, or engine; and performing watch duties and standing by to assist the officer of the watch in any emergency situations that may arise. Through such practical experiences, cadets gain a deep understanding of the maritime industry and the various roles and responsibilities involved in it, preparing them for successful careers in this field.
