Nautical Term: Scupper

Definition of Scupper

Scupper refers to any opening or tube in a ship that allows water from a waterway to drain off the ship’s deck.

For instance, during heavy rain or rough seas, water may accumulate on the ship’s deck. To prevent flooding, this water needs to be drained away. This is accomplished by having scuppers – openings or tubes – along the ship’s sides, leading from the waterway to the ship, to carry away the water from the deck.
