Unstuffing (or stripping)

Nautical Term: Unstuffing (or stripping)

Definition of Unstuffing (or stripping)

Unstuffing, also known as stripping, refers to the process of removing the contents of a container, such as a cargo hold or a shipping container, in preparation for loading new cargo or for inspection.

For example, consider a cargo ship that has arrived at the port with a container filled with automobiles. The crew of the ship would then begin the process of unstuffing the container. This would involve using a crane or a forklift to carefully remove each automobile from the container, taking care not to damage the vehicles or the container itself. Once all of the automobiles have been removed from the container, the crew can then prepare the container for loading with new cargo or for inspection by port authorities.
