Nautical Term: SEA

Definition of SEA

title: Comprehensive Agreement for Employment of Seafarers

The Seafarer Employment Agreement, often referred to as the SEA, is a legally binding contract that sets out the terms and conditions for the employment of seafarers.

In a typical scenario, a shipping company may enter into a SEA with a group of seafarers. The agreement would outline the seafarers’ wages, working hours, holidays, health and safety provisions, termination of employment, and other related matters.

For instance, suppose a shipping company and a group of seafarers agree to a SEA that stipulates a monthly wage of $2,500, a standard working week of 40 hours, and a minimum of 14 days’ paid leave per year. In the event of the seafarer’s termination of employment without cause, the SEA would also specify the seafarer’s entitlement to severance pay.
