Nautical Term: Shell landings
Definition of Shell landings
Shell landings refer to the specific points on a ship’s frames where the edges of the shell plates make contact. In practice, this information is useful in determining the condition of a ship’s hull, as well as in the process of repairs and maintenance.
For instance, during a routine inspection of a cargo ship, the crew discovers several areas of damage on the hull. Upon further examination, it is determined that the shell plates in these areas have come loose from their frames due to corrosion and wear. Based on this information, the crew can then begin the process of repairing the damaged hull sections by properly reattaching the shell plates to their frames.
