Nautical Term: Shell plating
Definition of Shell plating
Shell plating refers to the protective layer of metal plates applied to the exterior shell of a ship, specifically in the areas where the hull is most vulnerable to impact and damage from water, ice, or other objects.
For instance, a cargo ship sailing through the Arctic waters might have shell plating applied to its hull to protect it from the risk of ice collision and subsequent water ingress, which could potentially lead to serious damage to the ship or even sink it.
