Definition of Sponson

A structural extension added to the exterior side of a vessel, which extends beyond the regular hull. The sponson offers additional deck space and enhances the vessel’s flotation stability during rough seas or when carrying heavy loads.

For instance, a container ship may add sponsons to its sides to increase its overall cargo capacity and stability during harsh weather conditions.
