Nautical Term: Stern pipe

Definition of Stern pipe

A stern pipe refers to a vertical pipe that extends from the poop deck to the side opening. This pipe serves the purpose of facilitating the passage of mooring cables, chains, and ropes through the stern and to the vessel’s mooring points.

For instance, imagine a captain arriving at a marina to dock his ship. He would send one of his crew members to the stern to let the captain know when the mooring lines have been successfully secured to the dock. While the crew member is at the stern, he would thread the mooring lines through the stern pipe and then secure them to the dock’s mooring cleats.
