Nautical Term: Grommet
Definition of Grommet
A grommet is a type of reinforcing ring typically made of fiber, often soaked in sealants such as red lead or other packing materials. The grommet is employed primarily under the heads of bolts and nuts to ensure the preservation of tightness.
For instance, in the construction of a sailboat, the fabric sails are secured to the mast and the boom using a series of sail slides and shackles. To maintain the snug fit of these slides and shackles against the sails, grommets are fitted under the heads of the sails’ slides and shackles. These grommets, having been soaked in sealants prior to installation, create a watertight seal between the sail and the metal hardware, ensuring the longevity of the sail and the structural integrity of the boat.
