Nautical Term: Swash plates
Definition of Swash plates
Swash plates are flat, heavy plates installed inside tanks or other fluid containment structures. Their primary function is to minimize excessive liquid movement within the tank, thereby ensuring improved vessel stability and increased operational efficiency.
For instance, in a large cargo ship, swash plates are installed in the ballast water tanks. These plates minimize the sloshing effect of the ballast water, thereby improving the ship’s stability during the voyage.
