Nautical Term: Drain well

Definition of Drain well

Drain well refers to the procedure of ensuring that a chamber or compartment, which collects seepage water, is effectively drained. This is typically accomplished by using drainage pumps that expel the water into the sea through pump dales.

For instance, during a voyage, the watertight hold of a ship may collect seepage water from various sources. To prevent the accumulation of water in the hold and ensure the stability and safety of the ship, the seepage water must be effectively drained using drainage pumps and pump dales.
