Definition of Tonnage, net

Net tonnage is the internal volume of a ship that remains after deducting the volumes of specific compartments from the gross tonnage. For instance, in calculating the net tonnage of a cargo ship, the volumes of its engine room, cargo holds, and other essential spaces would be subtracted from the ship’s gross tonnage to determine its net tonnage.
