Nautical Term: Old man
Definition of Old man
An Old Man refers to a specialized tool used for holding drills in place while drilling through materials. The Old Man is designed as a Z-shaped piece of heavy bar iron. One leg of the Z is bolted to the material that is to be drilled. The drill top is then placed under the other leg of the Old Man and adjusted so that the Old Man holds the drill against the material, ensuring accurate and efficient drilling.
Example usage: During the construction of the new pier, the construction team encountered difficulty drilling through the concrete base of the old pier. To solve this issue, the team decided to use an Old Man drill holder. By bolting one leg of the Old Man to the concrete base of the old pier, and then securing the drill top under the other leg of the Old Man, the team was able to drill through the concrete base of the old pier with ease and accuracy.
