Definition of Tonnage
Tonnage is a measure of the volume of a ship. More specifically, the gross tonnage (GRT) represents the total enclosed volume of the ship, including the hull, machinery spaces, and all permanent installations. The net tonnage (NT), on the other hand, represents the volume of cargo and passenger spaces. Tonnage is defined by internationally agreed formulae and is used for dues for drydocking and pilotage, port and harbour dues, etc. It should be noted that tonnage represents a function of volume and should not be confused with deadweight mass (tonnes), lightship mass (tonnes), or displacement mass (tonnes).
