Nautical Term: Whaler

Definition of Whaler

A temporary bracing member, made of steel or wood, used to support and reinforce various structures on a vessel, such as bulkheads, deck sections, and other compartments.

For example: During the violent storm, several bulkheads in the cargo hold began to crack and leak water. To prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the crew, the first mate ordered the use of several whalers to temporarily brace the damaged bulkheads and prevent the ship from taking on too much water.
