Nautical Term: Afloat

Definition of Afloat

Afloat is a nautical term used to describe a vessel or other floating object that is not touching the ground or bottom. For instance, a sailboat is afloat when it is floating on the water, free from contact with the shore or seabed. During the regatta, all sailboats must remain afloat at all times. The race committee will disqualify any boat that touches the ground or comes to a complete stop while racing.
