Nautical Term: Aft

Definition of Aft

The term ‘aft’ refers to a position located at or moving towards the rear end of a vessel, commonly referred to as the stern. It is important to note that ‘aft’ is the opposite of the term ‘forward,’ which indicates a position or movement towards the front end of a vessel.

For example, The captain of the cargo ship ordered the anchor to be dropped ‘aft,’ towards the stern of the vessel, to prevent the ship from drifting backwards in the strong current.
