Nautical Term: Smothering lines

Definition of Smothering lines

Smothering lines refer to pipe lines that connect to a compartment designed for extinguishing fires through smothering techniques. This can be achieved either through the discharge of steam or the use of chemical agents.

For instance, in a shipping vessel, a fire erupts in the engine room. In response, the crew immediately activates the smothering lines connected to the engine room compartment. The discharge of the chemical agent smothers the fire, preventing it from spreading further and causing extensive damage to the vessel.
