Nautical Term: Ahoy

Definition of Ahoy

Ahoy is a traditional seafaring term used to hail or call out to another vessel or boat. This call is used to establish communication and ensure the safety of all parties involved.

For instance, imagine a lighthouse keeper noticing a small fishing boat in distress due to a sudden storm. The lighthouse keeper, using a megaphone, shouts out loud and clear, Ahoy, small fishing boat! This is the lighthouse. We see you’re in trouble. Please try to make your way to the harbor, following the beam of our lighthouse. We’ll be here to guide you through the storm safely.
