Nautical Term: Alee
Definition of Alee
Alee refers to the side or direction of a boat that is to the leeward side, which is the side that is sheltered from the wind.
For example, suppose a sailor is steering a sailboat. If the sailor notices that the wind is coming from the starboard side (the side of the boat that is to the right when facing the bow), then the sailor would need to steer the boat alee to the leeward side in order to avoid being blown off course by the wind.
