Definition of Dead flat
The midship section of a vessel, located between the fore and aft sections, exhibits a flat, unbroken surface when viewed from the sides, above the bilge, or from the bottom, below the bilge.

This observation was significant because it indicated that the vessel’s structural integrity was sound, and there were no signs of stress or deformation in the midship section.
