Nautical Term: Amidship(s)

Definition of Amidship(s)

Amidships(pl) is a term used s to describe the longitudinal, or fore-and-aft center, of a ship. More specifically, it refers to the point that is halfway between the stem and the stern of the ship. The term ‘amidships’ is used to convey the idea of general locality but not that of definite extent. For instance, if a ship’s captain was discussing the location of a particular cargo hold, they might say, ‘The cargo hold is located amidships, but more towards the starboard side.’ This use of the term ‘amidships’ allows for a clear and precise description of the location of the cargo hold on the ship.
