Nautical Term: Tongue

Definition of Tongue

The tongue of a stern post or propeller post refers to the raised, middle section that is affixed to the vertical keel. Typically, the tongue is raised to a height that is twice as high as the sides of the dished keel. For example, a ship’s rudder may be connected to the stern post via the tongue, allowing for steering control.
