Nautical Term: Auxiliaries

Definition of Auxiliaries

Auxiliaries refer to the various ancillary systems and equipment installed on a ship, distinct from the main propulsive machinery. For instance, auxiliaries might include winches, pumps and motors, generators, and engines used for various purposes on board a ship.

For example, in a research vessel, auxiliaries might include a hydraulic winch system for deploying scientific equipment over the side of the vessel, as well as a diesel generator set used to provide electrical power to the vessel when the main propulsion engines are not in use.
