Nautical Term: Avast

Definition of Avast

The command ‘Avast’ is used to signal a complete halt to all hauling activities on a ship. This means that any action related to the ship’s cargo, such as hoisting, lowering, or securing, must come to an immediate stop. For example, if the ship’s cargo was being loaded onto a truck, and the crew received the command ‘Avast’, they would be required to cease all loading activities and make any necessary safety preparations before resuming their work.
