Nautical Term: Mortise
Definition of Mortise
A mortise is a precisely carved hole in any material, designed to receive the end or return of another piece. For example, in boatbuilding, the mortise and tenon joint is commonly used to connect the planks of the hull. The mortise, carved into the edge of one plank, receives the projecting tenon of another plank, forming a strong and durable joint that is essential for the structural integrity of the boat.
