Definition of Backhaul

Backhaul refers to the transportation of goods or cargo back over a portion of a route that has previously been traveled by the same shipment or vehicle.

For example, A trucking company transports perishable goods from a farm in the Midwest to a grocery store in the East Coast. After delivering the perishable goods, the truck driver picks up a shipment of textiles from the East Coast to bring back to the Midwest. This shipment of textiles is considered the backhaul for the trucking company.
