Nautical Term: Burr edge

Definition of Burr edge

A burr edge refers to the rough, uneven edge that forms around the periphery of a punched or burnt hole or plate. For instance, if a sailor needed to create a new hole in a wooden sail for attaching a rope, they would use a tool like an ax or a drill bit to create the hole. However, the edge of the hole created by the tool would be rough and uneven, potentially causing damage to the sail or making it difficult to attach the rope. To address this issue, the sailor could use a file or sandpaper to smooth out the rough edges of the hole, ensuring that the sail remains in good condition and that the rope can be easily attached.
