Definition of Batten

A batten is a long, narrow strip of material, typically wood or metal, used to secure or stiffen various structures, particularly those intended to be watertight. For instance, battens might be used to reinforce the frames of hatches, ensuring a snug and watertight seal. Similarly, battens might be employed to reinforce the bulwarks of a ship, providing additional strength and rigidity to the vessel’s hull.
