Definition of IFO
Intermediate Fuel Oil, commonly referred to as IFO, is a heavy fuel oil used for marine propulsion. This oil falls between the lighter Bunker C Fuel Oil and the heavier Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) with a viscosity greater than 180 centistokes.
For instance, during a lengthy voyage, a ship might consume Intermediate Fuel Oil to propel itself forward. At the same time, they may opt to carry lighter Bunker C Fuel Oil for use in the ship’s auxiliary engines or generators.
